Brian Picone, a George Mason University activist and recent alumnus, died Monday night of cardiac arrest. He was 22. I worked with him in Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Feminist Ninjas, and I always looked forward to his performances at the annual Mason Drag Show as Brianna Spice. He was also a member of GMU’s Pride Alliance and organized around immigration issues. Describing his experiences as a gay man at GMU helped to reaffirm how much intolerance there still is on our campus and it pained me to hear about the hate he had to frequently endure. Despite this he was always exuberant and captivating. He will always remind me to speak up when I witness others being oppressed. Using words like “gay” as a derogatory adjective, or referencing someone as a “faggot” or “homo” is completely unacceptable. It is up to each of us to speak up.

I will definitely miss his impassioned spirit, brilliance, and radiance.

Service: Friday, October 30 at 2pm – Unitarian Universalist Church

2709 Hunter Mill Rd. Oakton, VA 22124-1614 | Phone: (703) 281-4230

A note from Brian’s family:

“EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE is invited, and please come out in Drag, glitter, glam, metal, flags, anything that is expressive of you, because that’s what Brian wanted: for you to be you. In other words, NO formal attire required. We’ll join together, remember, and celebrate the beautiful soul that will always be Brian Picone aka Brianna Spice. Please no flowers, Brian would want the money to go to social justice – La Clinica Del Pueblo (www.lcdp.org) or Tenants & Workers United (www.tenantsandworkers.org).”
